Late fifteenth-century (after 1479) Psalter with a blue historiated initial 'B(eatus vir)' on gold ground - the the beginning of Ps 1. Within the initial are the Virgin and Child within a mandorla, on theleft David with harp (?) and a scroll with 'In sole posuit tabernaculum suum et ipse tam' (Ps 18:6), and below the lying figure of Jesse asleep with a scroll: 'Virga Yesse'. In the lower margin is a half figure of a nimbed Bernard in a white cowl pointing to the text withhis right hand. A scroll reads: 'Angeli psallentibus admisceri soleant - Bernardus' (The angels are accustomed to mingle with us when we praise God in psalms - Bernard) from Sermo 7 on the Song of Songs. |
