Description:
One of twelve early fifteenth-century images from the life of Bernard in the chapel dedicated to him at Owen in Wuerttemberg, of which fragments of eleven remain. Bernard lies in bed, his head resting on a pillow. As recorded in the Vita Prima he died just before Terce surrounded by his monks. They are shown here before Bernard, all holding candles except for the monk in front who is the officiating priest, identified by his stole. He is pointing to Bernard with one hand and sprinkling him with an aspergillum with the other. The next scene (WA49) shows his funeral, the same as in the Zwettl altarpiece (PA044 & PA045).
