Description:
Crucifixion scene painted by Pietro Perugino in 1496 for the Chapter House of the Cistercian Abbey of Cestello (to-day S Maria Maddalena). The central of the three arches has the Crucifixion itself with St Mary Magdalen kneeling at the foot of the Cross. On the right St Johm Evangelist stands with St Benedict kneeling, and on the left the Virgin stands and Bernard kneels. The scene is in a green wooded landscape with hills. This was the source for Perugino's Amplexus fresco in the same abbey (see WA22).
