Description:
Hanging thought to have been from the back of the nuns' stalls at the Benedictine abbey of Luene and used only on special feast days. Embroidered c 1500 on wool on a blue ground. Seven large medallions contain scenes from the life of St George between which are half figures of angels and saints alternatively. Among the saints is one described as 'an abbot with crozier and book in a pale brown habit' who may be identified as Bernard as there is a corresponding abbot in black, correctly identified as Benedict. Among the other saints are Bernward of Hildesheim, Eligius (?), Dominic (or Thomas Aquinas?), Augustine (?), Ambrose (?), and Francis. Five similar hangings are still preserved at Luene, two of them also with scenes from the life of St George. The others contain scenes from the lives of Bartolomew and Catherine. The arms of Abbess Sophia von Bodendike (1481-1504) and the provost Schomaker (1493-1504) indicate the date.
