Description:
Antependium embroidered in the late fifteenth century at the nuns' abbey of Medingen on blue wool using coloured silk as well as gold and silver thread. Known as the Wichmannsburg antependium from the neighbouring church to which it was moved in 1788. The centre has a large scene of the Crucifixion and below biblical scenes from both the Old and New Testaments. In the corners are four large medallions with, on the left, the Virgin and Michael, and, on the right, St Maurice and John the Baptist. The central scene is flanked by thirteen smaller medallions on each side, each containing a half-figure of a saint and a scroll with an inscription. One of these is Bernard with a red halo and carrying a crozier in his left hand, his right hand being raised. The inscription reads: 'Non defut foramina p- que uo fluit misericord' taken from his Sermon on the Song of Songs 61 (...which overflows with mercy. And there is no lack of clefts by which they are poured out.) Among the other saints are the apostles, Benedict, Augustine, Gregory, and Ambrose.
