Description:
One of the sixteen carved oak figures formerly placed within the inner wings of the pentatych commissioned by Abbot Peder Andersen for the high altar at Esrum in 1496 represents St Bernard. The others are the apostles and two deacon saints, Vincent, and probably Laurence. While most of these are now in the National Museum in Copenhagen, three apostles and Bernard are now in the Lutheran village church of Rislev placed around the pulpit. Bernard is shown in the new-style cowl with an open book in his left hand and with his right hand missing but with the arm in a position which suggests that he previously held a crozier with this. See also SC51. Bernard has 'tuft'.
