Description:
Polychrome wooden statue from a Middle Rhine workshop dated c 1520. Bernard in a white cowl has a crozier with attached golden sudarium in his right hand and an open book, red with decorative golden studs, in his left hand. The cowl has a red border inscribed with words in gold: SANCTUS BERNHARDUS ORA PRO NO(BIS AD) DEUS. The proximity of the church in which it is now to the former Cistercian Nuns' Abbey of Dalheim suggests that it may have come from there or alternatively one of the other Cistercian nunneries in Mainz. Bernard has 'tuft'.
