Description:
Sculpture carved in oak in the Rhineland (Aachen ?) around 1500. Bernard's asceticism is accentuated by the lean face and bony hands with veins showing. He holds a crozier, relatively simple in design for the late Middle Ages, in his right hand and an open book clasped to his body by his left hand. A chain is attached to a ring around his left wrist at the end of which is a small demon at his feet.
