Country Switzerland
Description:
The 32 late Gothic choir stalls at Hauterive carved in low relief were made in 1476 during the abbacy of Philibert (1472-86). Among the saints are carvings of Benedict (illustrated in Barbey 1951, ill 10) with his hood over his head and carrying crozier and book. Bernard has the crozier in his right hand, a book under his left arm, and with his left hand he raises the front of his cowl to reveal the tunic and scapular underneath.
