Description:
The Cistercian nunnery of Santa Maria de Celas was founded in the twelfth century by Sancha, wife of King Sancho I. The cloister was built during the reign of Alfonso III (1245-79) and has historiated capitals which are unique in Portugal. One of these has carvings of St Benedict on the left carrying a book in his left hand and Bernard on the right with his left hand raised in blessing, and both of them with a crozier in the right hand.
