Description:
Sculptures were prohibited in early Cistercian legislation and for a long time this restriction was strictly adhered to and there were no statues in their churches, not even of St Bernard. One of the earliest examples of deviation from this is a statue in red limestone from about 1350, high above the celebrants' sedilia at the Cistercian abbey of Amelungsborn in Lower Saxony.
