Description:
From c 1280 this is thought to be the earliest known stone statue of Bernard. It commemorates Bernard's visit to Freiburg on 3 and 4 December 1146 following his decision after his visit to Frankfurt am Main not to return straight to Clairvaux but to accept Bishop Hermann of Constance's invitation to preach the Crusade in Switzerland. It is located in the northeastern corner of the West Tower of Freiburg Cathedral. Bernard is wearing a cape fastened by a buckle in front over his habit.
