In this Flemish Amplexus image from the end of the fifteenth century or the beginning of the sixteenth century Christ has the right hand detached from the Cross which is placed on the left shoulder of a kneeling Bernard while his left hand is, most unusually, still attached to the Cross. As is quite usual in Amplexus images Bernard is larger in scale than Christ. A smaller donor Cistercian abbess kneels on the right, her hands clasped in prayer and her crozier leaning on here left shoulder. Her coat of arms and a scull are in the foreground. The setting is a mountainous landscape with a castle in the background.
