Description:
Panel from a triptych painted in 1518 in Piedmont for the chapel of Claude d'Estavayer (c 1485-1534), abbot of Hautecombe and bishop of Bellay at the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe in Savoy. A nimbed Bernard in a white cowl and a richly-embroidered cope sits at a desk with an open book and pen in his right hand. His crozier leans against a wall behind him. He looks up at a smaller Virgin surrounded by cherubs in a mandorla above. The Virgin bares her right breast which she squeezes with her right hand in what is both a Lactation and Doctrina image.
