Description:
Bernardo Martorell's altarpiece of St Vincent from the parish church of Menarguens dated c 1435-40 has St Vincent in the centre flanked by scenes from the saint's life, and, above, instead of the traditional Crucifixion, Our Lady of Mercy, her mantle held up by two angels under which are two groups of kneeling figures, led by St Benedict on the left and Bernard on the right, each nimbed, with hands folded in prayer and carrying a gold crozier. They are virtually identical except for the colour of their habits, Benedict's black and Bernard's white. The arms of the monastery of Poblet refer to the connection with Menarguens, where the church was dedicated to St Vincent, and does not mean that it came from Poblet as sometimes asserted.
