Polyptych painted c 1438 by Dominico di Bartolo for the Cistercian nuns of St Giuliana, founded 1253 by the English Cistercian Cardinal John of Toledo. In the centre the enthroned Virgin and Child, the Virgin with her left hand on the head of the small kneeling figure of a Cistercian nun in white habit and black veil who commissioned the painting. On the left St Benedict, in a black cowl and carrying crozier and book, and St John Baptist, and, on the right, St Giuliana and Bernard in a white cowl and carrying crozier and book. The inscription reads: DOMINICUS BARTOLI - DE SENIS. ME PINXIT. HOC OPUS FECIT FIERI DOMINA ANTONIA FILIA FRA(N)CISCI DE DOMO BU/CCHOLIS ABBATISSA ISTIUS MONASTERII IN N ANNO D(OMIN)I MCCCCXXXVIII.
