Description:
The Doctrina Altarpiece by the Master of the Rinuccini Chapel from the third quarter of the fourteenth century (see PA155) has a predella with one scene from the lives of the four saints featured on the sides panels - Benedict, John the Evangelist, Quentin, and Galgano - and, in the centre, two from the life of Bernard (see also PA157). Bernard sits surrounded by a number of his monks. He greets his five brothers standing before him, from the left Nivard, Bartholomew, Andrew, Gerard, and Guy. Bernard holds the hand of Gerard, identified by the wound in his side which he received when still a soldier.
