Description:
Cistercian altarpiece commissioned in 1492 from Stefano Folchetti by Abbot Giovanni. The Virgin and Child flanked by the large figures of St Benedict on the left and Bernard on the right and, below, the smaller figures of St Rocco & St Sebastian. Benedict is bearded, carries a crozier and holds an open book while Bernard has his hands folded and a crozier resting on his right shoulder. They are both mitred and wearing richly embroidered copes fastened by bejewelled clasps. The inscription below reads: HOC OPUS FUIT / TEMPORE DNI JOHANNIS / ABBATIS ANNO DOMINI 1492.
