Description:
A Lactation image from the beginning of the sixteenth century has a nimbed Bernard kneeling before a desk on which is an open book and an inkwell. He has a pen in his right hand. He is looking up at the Virgin and Child standing before him and surrounded by angels. The Virgin bares her right breast which she squeezes with her right hand. She is surrounded by seven small angels. A tiny donor figure kneels in the bottom lefthand corner. In the background are trees and a large church. Although the painting has the charactersistics of a Doctrina image, it is in fact a Lactation picture, rare for Italy. Bernard has 'tuft'.
