Painting by Monte di Giovanni from c 1490. At the top the half-figure of God the Father in the sky within circles of different colours and a yellow centre. On a platform raised up from the ground the kneeling figure of Christ, his right hand pointing to the wound in his side, looks up at the Father whose right hand is stretched out towards him. In the rays between the two is a the small dove of the Holy Spirit. Also kneeling on the platform is the Virgin, her left hand placed on her naked breast and her right hand on the shoulder of a small kneeling man accompanied by his wife and two small children (the donor family), all of them kneeling between the figures of Mary and Christ. On the ground below the platform is the kneeling figure of Bernard looking out at the viewer while pointing to the scene with his right hand. With his left hand he holds a scroll with the words attributed to him but in fact written by his friend Arnold of Bonneval: O HOMO SECURUM HABES ACCESSUM [...] ANTE PATREM MATREM HABES ANTE [...] OSTENDIT VULNERA. MATREM OSTENDIT FILIO PECTI UBERA. IBI VIDEO UBI TOT CARITATIS SUNT INSIGNIA (PL189:1726). A beautiful landscape with mountains and a Gothic town forms the background. Bernard has 'tuft'.
