Description:
An oil painting on canvas attributed to Paolo Uccello from c 1460-5 containing a number of scenes from different religious milieus: Franciscan, Servite, Camaldolese, and Cistercian, including the Vision of Bernard, the stigmatization of St Francis, the sermon of St Bernardino of Siena, the penitent St Jerome, and St Romuald preaching to his monks. In the foreground on the left the Virgin in a mandorla and surrounded by angels is appearing to Bernard whom she is blessing with her right hand. Bernard is seated at a high-backed chair and desk combined, on which is an open book. He has a pen in his right hand. In the far left corner is a small devil, and on the right of Bernard a small dog.
