Description:
Panel painted on poplar c 1360, probably the central part of a triptych showing the Coronation of the Virgin. Christ sits on a Gothic throne on the left and places a crown on the head of Mary who is surrounded by angels. Below is a row of ten more angels, the one on the right playing a long tuba from which hangs a gold banner with a white cross, while one on the left plays a bagpipe. On the side of the throne are symmetrically placed saints, on the left John the Baptist, Paul, John the Evangelist (?), Augustine, Stephen, and (in this detail) Benedict & Clara; on the right Peter, Francis, a bishop, Laurence, Dominic, and (in this detail) Catherine & Bernard.
