Description:
Like a number of other Lactation pictures Bernard is the portrait of the donor, a Franco-Flemish Cistercian abbot represented in the guise of the saint. The half-figure of Bernard, his hands clasped in prayer and his crozier under his left arm kneels before the Virgin and the naked Child. The Virgin presses her breast with her left hand in the traditional fashion, but the usual scroll with Bernard's words is missing.
