Description:
One of four panels with scenes from the life of Bernard from an altarpiece painted in 1518 from the former Cistercian church of Neuberg in Styria (see also PA098-100). Bernard in a white cowl kneels before the Crucified Christ whose arms are detached from the Cross and placed on Bernard's shoulders in an embrace. Bernard's crozier lies on the rocky ground into which the Cross is fixed with two wooden wedges. At the top of the Cross is the inscription 'INRI'. The scene is a rocky wooded landscape with a castle on a hill. Bernard has 'tuft'.
