Description:
One of four panels with scenes from the life of Bernard from an altarpiece painted in 1518 from the former Cistercian church of Neuberg in Styria (see also PA098-9 and 101). Bernard kneels, his hands clasped in prayer and his crozier under the right arm, before the crowned and enthroned Virgin and Child. The Virgin bares her breast which she presses and sends three jets of milk in the direction of Bernard. The scene is in a Gothic church with tiled floor. The arms of Clairvaux are at Bernard's feet and above his head is a banderole with the incription 'Monstra te esse matrem'. Bernard has 'tuft'.
