Description:
One of four panels with scenes from the life of Bernard from an altarpiece painted 1518 from the former Cistercian church of Neuberg in Styria (see also PA098 & PA100-1). Bernard in a white cowl and with a black cap and with his crozier under his right arm looks up at and points to the abbey of Clairvaux under construction. A number of monks in white tunics and black scapulars and a number of lay workers are busily engaged in various building operations both on the ground and on the roof where a hoist is lifting up a large stone. A small dog is at Bernard's feet. There are mountains in the background. This is a rare representation of Bernard watching the building of his abbey. A similar scene is included in the Altenberg glass panel which depicts Bernard being sent to Clairvaux by his abbot (see GL10) and there is also a miniature in a French manuscript depicting Bernard watching his abbey being built (see MA043)
