Description:
One of four panels with scenes from the life of Bernard from an altarpiece painted 1518 from the former Cistercian church of Neuberg in Styria (see also PA099-101). The kneeling figure of Bernard in a white tunic receives the white cowl at the hands of a corpulent Stephen Harding who is dressed in a black cowl and wears a large black cap. He has a crozier in his left hand while his right hand is raised in blessing. Another monk is helping Bernard to put on the cowl. The scene takes place in a vaulted chamber with three columns and a window at the back and is witnessed by a large group of monks, all in black cowls, on one side and a group of laymen, the relations and companions who entered Citeaux at the same time as Bernard, on the other side. Bernard has 'tuft'.
