In the foreground Bernard, wearing a cope over his white cowl and with his crozier leaning against his left shoulder, has his hands outstretched towards an enthroned Virgin with Child who bares her breast with her right hand. Angels hold a crown above the Virgin's head. In a scene out of doors in the middle background the Virgin appears to Bernard who kneels before her, and in the far right, in a scene inside a church, Bernard kneels before the Cross from which Christ with arms detached from the Cross to embrace Bernard. The painting is unique in that the central Lactation scene is accompanied by secondary scenes of the other two scene-attributes, the 'Amplexus' and the 'Doctrina'.
