Description:
Oil, tempera, gold leaf on cradled panel. Late fifteenth century half-figure against a gold background looking down, with hands clasped in prayer and a crozier with sudarium attached leaning against the right shoulder. The inscription 'Monstra te esse matrem' tells us that this is part of a Lactation scene only half of which has survived, the other half depicting the Virgin with bared breast being missing. The features of the figure representing Bernard are very distinctive and it is probably the portrait of a donor abbot.
