Description:
Madonna and Child Enthroned with four Saints painted c 1450 by Neri di Bicci (School of Florence), son of Bicci di Lorenzo who strongly influenced him as did later Fra Angelico and Filippo Lippi. On the left Bernardino of Siena and John the Baptist, on the right Bernard and Apollonia, as indicated by their attributes and their names inscribed along the lower edge of the panel. The inscription on the book held by Bernard reads: 'BONUM EST/ NOC HIC ESSE/ IN RELIGIONE/ HOMO (?) VIVIT PU/RIUS. CADIT RA/RIUS. RESURGIT/ VELOCIUS. INCIDIT/ CAUTIUS. QUIESCIT SECURIUS/ PURGATUR/ CITIUS./ MORITUR/ CONFIDENTIUS./ ET PREMIATUR/ COPIOS/IUS. Bdus.' - based on Math 17:4, Mark 9:5, Luke 9:33 ('It is good to be here'), and inspired by an anonymous pseudo-Bernard Sermon (PL184:1131B). Bernard has a 'tuft'.
