Description:
MThe inner side of an altarpiece wing painted 1508 for the church of Lilienfeld, the outer side of which features four saints, Barbara, Catherine, Pantaleon, and Margaret. The lifeless body of Christ has both arms detached from the Cross and is slumped against the body of a kneeling Bernard, his head resting against Bernard's and the arms falling down Bernard's back, with the body supported by a long cloth held by two angels, one on either side. Bernard is shown in a black cowl with his crozier leaning against his right shoulder. A mitre rests on the ground next to the arms of Clairvaux. The scene of this unusual Amplexus image is set in a wooded, mountainous landscape.
