Triptych of the Madonna, Saints, and the Crucifixion painted by Lorenzo di Niccolo, born c 1370, who worked with his father in Prato 1392-5. He was strongly influenced by Spinello Aretino. In 1402 he was commissioned to paint for the High Altar of San Marco, Florence, now in San Domenico, Cortona. After the death of his father he was influenced by the art of Lorenzo Monaco. He was still living in 1440. The centre features the Virgin, in a blue mantle over a carmine dress, with, on her knee, the Child, who is playing with a grey bird. The left wing has six saints in three rows, one above the other. At the top St John the Baptist and St James, then St John the Evangelist and Bernard, and below, St Dorothea and St Anthony. The right wing features the Crucifixion, and at the top of the two wings, is a scene of the Annunciation.
