Bernard? The central panel of a triptych or the left part of a diptych painted on poplar by the Master of the Madonna of the Palazzo Venezia who was active in Siena in the second quarter of the fourteenth century. The central figure of the Virgin and Child is flanked by St Francis and St James Major on the left and a saint-abbot in white cowl and a saint-deacon on the right. The abbot is possibly Bernard, but, being I talian, may also represent St Benedict or St Romuald. In the gable above three medallions feature the Man of Sorrows, St Mary Magdalen, and St John Evangelist.
