Description:
A late fifteenth-century Lactation painting by Joos van Cleve. Half-figures of the Virgin and a kneeling Bernard are behind a sill on which a naked Child sits on a cushion playing with a string of beads. Bernard has his hands clasped in prayer and holds a very elaborate crozier under his right arm. The Virgin presses her breast with her right hand in a typical Lactation scene. The usual inscription is missing. A landscape with a church is in the background. An open book rests on the sill. Bernard may represent an abbot portrait. There is a Lactation painting by an artist in the circle of Joos van Cleve, see PA072.
