Description:
The inner side of the wings painted by Joerg Breu in 1500 (visible when the wings are open) on the left, lower panel, depicts the death of Bernard. He lies on a mat on the floor and is being handed a candle by one of the eight kneeling monks, all, like Bernard, in black cowls and six of them with their hoods over their heads. An aspersorium and a candlestick with a candle are placed on the tiled floor in the foreground. Two angels, carrying a cloth with which they are preparing to receive Bernard's soul, are floating above the scene. On the left there is a view of a passage with two more monks, and beyond, through a doorway, a man is carrying a coffin on his shoulder (see also SC10, PA038-043, and PA045),
