Description:
The outer side of the wings painted by Joerg Breu in 1500 (seen when the wings are closed) on the right, upper panel, depicts the arrival of the brothers at Citeaux being greeted by three very much larger monks in black cowls with the hoods over their heads. On the right is a servant carrying a bundle. On the far right Bernard's sister, Humbeline, is being received by three nuns in black cowls over white tunics. Over the gate the year 1500 is inscribed (not 1450 or 1501 as has been suggested). On the right behind the nuns is a church, and in the middle a landscape with trees, a castle, and a mountain. There are two dogs in the foreground, one brown and one white (see also SC10, PA038, and PA040-5).
