Description:
Oil painting from c 1520 of the Lactatio. A half-figure of Bernard with hands clasped in prayer and holding a crozier, from which a sudarium with a triangular top is attached, kneels before an altar on which a Virgin and Child, much smaller in scale, are seated. The Virgin, facing Bernard, squeezes a bared breast with her right hand. A candlestick and lighted candle as well as an open so-called purse book, with its red purse hanging down and ending in a tassle, are also upon the altar. A mountain landscape with a walled town and two mountain-top castles may be seen through two arched windows.
