Description:
From c 1450, the Heisterbach altarpiece was painted by the most important pupil and successor of Stephan Lochner, to whom it was previously attributed. The central panel, probably representing six of the apostles, is lost. The other six apostles plus St Benedict and Bernard are featured on the two side wings, the inner side of the inner wing on the right with Bartholomew, Simon, and Mathias together with this portrait of Bernard in a dark grey cowl with the white tunic showing underneath. He is identified by the inscription 'sanctus. bernardus' within the golden halo. Oak covered with linen. Bernard has 'tuft'.
