Description:
Book of Hours (Use of Rome) made in Flanders, probably Bruges, c 1515 for the King of Portugal, Manoel I or his eldest son, Infante Joao. Given to Don Alvaro da Costa, and therefore known as 'Da Costa Hours'. Christ with green crown of thorns and ray halo has arms detached from a T-Cross and bends down ro embrace a larger Bernard in white cowl and with a round halo. The setting is a Gothic church. The border has flowers, a snail, and a butterfly on a gold ground.
