Description:
Antiphonary from the Cistercian nuns' abbey of Arouca dated first half og the thirteenth century. Mafalfa, daughter of King Sancho I of Portugal, married King Henrique of Castile, after whose death in 1219 she became a nun at Arouca. The standing figure of a nimbed Bernard, in a greyish cowl and with his hood partially over his head, is within the initial P(rima virtus viri sancti), the first Responsory of the first Nocturn from Vigils. Bernard is pointing in a teaching mode.
