Description:
Late medieval Book of Hours with Lactation scene witin an elaborate frame with the inscription IHS at the top and the two words SPES on one side MEA on the other (MY HOPE). On the right the Virgin is wearing a large blue cloak which is draped on a table in front of her on which she has placed the naked Child whom she holds with her left hand. With her right hand she squeezes her right bared breast. A nimbed Bernard in a white cowl has his hands folded in prayer and rests his crozier on his right shoulder. Above Bernard is the usual inscription, but, unusually, quoted at greater length: MONSTRA TE ESSE MATREM SUMAT PER TE PRECEM. Behind Bernard is a lady, the owner of the book. Above her is a scroll with text which cannot be read.
