Description:
A Prayer Book belonging to Abbot Konrad Moerlin and painted in Augsburg in 1505 by Ulrich Taler has a historiated initial C(aritate vulneratus castitate dealbatus) - from the Alleluia for the Mass of St Bernard - within which is an Amplexus scene. The lifeless body of Christ with arms detached from a T-Cross is supported by the larger figure of a nimbed Bernard in a black cowl. The arms of Clairvaux are at the foot of the Cross. The scene is out of doors with a large castle in the background. The border is decorated with realistic birds, flowers and fruit on a gold ground.
