Description:
Miniature at the beginning of Book 28, Chapter 1, of the 'Mirror of History' by Vincent of Beauvais translated to French by Jean de Vignay and dated 1396, the title of which is given in red underneath: 'De la commendacion saint bernart de clervaux'. The chapter deals with the year 1153 and the first piece of information is the death of Pope Eugenius III. The pope is depicted seated, wearing a tiara and carrying a cross, pointing to a cardinal carrying a crozier. Behind him is a tonsured monk, who although he is not nimbed (as in the other miniature in the manuscript) or carrying a crozier must nevertheless, in view of the title of the chapter, represents St Bernard. The other image of Bernard is on f 117v (MA406).
