Description:
One of 33 large miniatures in a Book of Hours. The Calendar in French has many saints from the Artois and Beauvais, more than from the diocese of Amiens. The text in red below indicates that it illustrates the Seven Verses of Bernard and is followed by the first verse: 'Illumina oculos meos'. The nimbed figure of Bernard sits on a bench at a desk with an open book. Several other closed books rest on the two tiers of the desk. Bernard is wearing a white tunic and black scapular over which is a strange white mantle and not a cowl. The border is decorated with birds and flowers.
