Description:
Historiated initial in a Breviary from a Vallombrosan Abbey made in Florence in the last quarter of the fifteenth century. A nimbed Bernard in a white cowl sits writing at a desk within the red initial L(argite nobis omnipotens deus nostrorum indulgentia peccatorum qui beatum bernardum confessorem tuum atque pontificem tuorum dignitas es agregare ...confessorum'.. He is looking up as if he has a vision of Mary as in Doctrina images. This prayer among the Proper of Saints refers to St Bernard, bishop of Parma, but the miniature clearly represents Bernard of Clairvaux.
