Description:
From a Dante manuscript dated 1456 including Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso and with a commentary by Francesco da Buti. A miniature illustrating Canto 31 has a naked Bernard, only identified by his golden halo, turning to Dante behind him and pointing to the seated Virgin in the sky within a mandorla. Below her four souls (ie naked figures) are seated. This miniature is modelled on an almost identical image in a Paduan Dante manuscript (see MA276). It is one of three miniatures featuring Bernard (see also MA387 & MA388).
