Description:
One of 21 leaves with full-page miniatures from a Prayerbook in German dated c 1490 from southern Germany, probably Nuremberg. One of these is an Amplexus image with Bernard in a purplish-grey cowl kneeling to receive the lifeless body of Christ with his arms detached from the T-Cross and dangling down Bernard's back. Their heads touch. The Cross has the inscription INRI. Bernard's crozier with gold top and black staff with three gold bands lies on the ground at the front together with a red book on top of which is a gold mitre. A large rock with trees on top is behind the Cross. The inclusion of this image suggests a possible Cistercian connection.
