Description:
Bernard? The first leaf of a Venetian ducale, issued by Abdreas Gitti, Doge 1523-39, granting a commission to Antonio Barbaro as podesta of Brixia (Brescia) has a miniature pasted on the lower half of a page. The Virgin and Child are enthroned between the standing figures of St Dominic on the left and a saint in a white habit whom Wormald & Giles have identified as Bernard, who presents the holder of the commission, a young man in red robes who kneels in prayer at his feet. However, the unusual cord around the saint's cowl and the cross he carries in his right hand makes the attribution questionable.
