Description:
A Book of Hours (Use of Rome) in Latin from Ghent or Bruges dated c 1500 has among the Suffrages to the saints one to Bernard indicated by the text above a miniature in red ink 'de sancto bernardo'. Bernard is wearing a black cowl with gold outlines, kneels before a pink altar covered by a white cloth. Placed on this is a painting of a half-figure of the Virgin holding the Child. She presses her breast with her left hand and squirts three jets of milk towards Bernard. Bernard's gold crozier with sudarium is in the background. The border is of flowers and fruit with crossed branches in gold on a green ground.
