Description:
Miniature in a Missal dated 1305-14 which belonged to the Cistercian nuns of Lorvao in Portugal. At the beginning of the Sanctoral introducing the feast of St Benedict with the Introit 'Os justi' there is an inscription 'sanctus bernardus abbas et sanctus benedictus abbas'. The miniature shows Benedict in a black cowl holding an open book (the Rule) in his left hand while pointing with the index finger of his right hand in a teaching mode to two Cistercian monks in white cowls in front of him, one of whom is carrying a brown book with clasps. Behind Benedict is the figure of Bernard in a brown cowl.
